I’m from Larne, a small town up the Northeast coast of Ireland, in County Antrim. I graduated from Ulster University in July 2025 with a First Class Honours in Biomedical Engineering and a Diploma in Professional Practice with Distinction. Outside of my research and studies, I enjoy playing hockey, knitting, travelling and going to concerts and gigs whenever I can.
For my placement year, I worked in Boston Scientific, Galway, as a member of Structural Heart Valve team within Process Development department. I had the opportunity to help design and automate processes used in testing and production. One of my favourite projects involved exploring how a programmable robotic arm could be implemented to fully automate existing processes. It was during this time that I really saw how technology can make a huge impact in the Med-Tech industry.
For my final year dissertation project, I focused on developing a haemostasis diagnostic and the thin-film deposition of tissue factor. I compared different coating techniques to see which performed best, with the aim of improving how tissue factor could be used in diagnostics. This built on my interest in diagnostics, where I enjoy the challenge of the trial-and-error process that research often involves, test new approaches and see improvements that one day make a real difference in patient care.
Going forward, I’m excited to build on my experience and keep exploring how technology can be used in healthcare, especially through the Tech4Health area.
