Project Title: Ultrahigh resolution X-ray imaging to understand the progression of spinal osteoarthritis

I am a PhD student in the Multiscale X-ray Imaging Lab at University College London, where my doctoral research involves using synchrotron imaging and computational modelling to understand biomechanical changes in the spine during osteoarthritis progression.
I graduated from the University of Oxford with an MEng in Engineering Science. For my master’s project I developed a poroelastic tissue model to study blood flow in the brain, which sparked my interest in using computational modelling to study complex biological problems. I later expanded on this work during a research internship at the University of Manchester, investigating how changes to the brain microvasculature affect cerebral perfusion.
My research interests lie in intersection of advanced imaging, computational modelling, and clinical applications. My current work uses high-resolution X-ray imaging to explore microscale hard and soft tissue morphology in the intact spine to characterise how spine microarchitecture changes with osteoarthritis. By comparing these findings across species and correlating HiP-CT to clinical imaging modalities like MRI, this project aims to improve our understanding of how the structure of the spine is related to its function. I hope that these findings will help to support the discovery of new imaging biomarkers that will enable earlier, more accurate diagnosis.
